Elisha Ayer, a native of Haverhill, Mass., early in his life moved to Pepperellborough (Saco) in Maine. A highly successful business man and trader owning all of Cutt's Island (now Factory Island) he married Mary, the sister of Senator James McLellan, and moved to Newfield, Maine, in 1790 to become the scion of one of the town's leading families.
